There's a particular kind of coworker everyone has worked alongside — hired to sit in the corner and take notes, and eighteen months later somehow running the meeting. Nobody remembers voting on that promotion. It happens one useful thing at a time, until the person taking notes is the person you can't run the department without.
Fireflies.ai just gave itself that promotion in software form. On September 2, the company — until now best known as the quiet AI that sits in your Zoom calls writing down what everyone said — launched Voice Agents: an AI that doesn't just record the conversation anymore. It has it. Since rolling out, Fireflies says its Voice Agents have already conducted more than 40,000 conversations across 2,100+ organizations in 97 countries.
From Transcribing the Call to Running It
Fireflies built its name on capture. More than 20 million people and over a million organizations use it to record, transcribe, and summarize meetings, and the company says it has processed over 7 billion meeting minutes for teams at 75% of Fortune 500 companies. Voice Agents is the company deciding that if it already knows what a good version of a call sounds like, it might as well run one.
"For years, we've helped people capture and make sense of their calls," said Krish Ramineni, Fireflies' CEO and co-founder, in the launch announcement. "Voice Agents is the next step. Fireflies can now have the conversation for you, then hand your team back exactly what mattered."
There's a guardrail worth noting: a Voice Agent speaks strictly from the knowledge base a team gives it, and Fireflies says it never improvises outside of it. It listens, follows up naturally, and the moment the call ends, the recording, transcript, and summary already exist. Fireflies' AI Skills then turn that transcript into whatever the team actually needed — a screening call becomes a candidate scorecard, a sales call becomes CRM-ready discovery notes, a support call becomes a bug report, a customer call becomes a ready-to-publish quote or case study — delivered automatically to the 100+ tools a team already runs on.
The Recruiting Number Worth Sitting With
The most concrete result in the announcement comes from WebFX, a digital marketing agency that put Voice Agents to work screening job candidates. "The biggest impact has been getting our time back," said Laura Passmore, WebFX's Talent Acquisition lead. "We've been able to consider a broader range of candidates instead of being stuck on the phone all day. Nearly 300 screenings later, about a third of our new hires started with a Voice Agent."
Fireflies' own recruiting team reports something similar internally: more than 800 hours saved screening candidates this way, using role-based one-click setup that auto-fills interview questions and has a scorecard waiting the moment the call ends.
Read that carefully and the shift isn't "AI replaces the recruiter." It's "AI widens the top of the funnel, because screening candidate number forty no longer costs the same hour as candidate number four." The humans still decide who gets hired. They just stopped being the bottleneck for finding out who's worth deciding on.
What's Actually New, and What's Still Just a Chatbot with Better Manners
The part of this launch clearly aimed at adoption friction: Voice Agents are available today on every Fireflies plan, priced on a usage-based credit model rather than a separate contract or a per-seat fee. Teams start from a template or build a custom agent, then share it by link, embed, QR code, or ATS integration — and every call still lands in the same Meetings tab as everything else Fireflies records, in any of 30+ supported languages.
Worth being precise about what this isn't. Voice Agents run inside a team's existing workflow — recruiting screens, sales discovery calls, tier-one support, customer testimonial collection, recurring check-ins. It's a scoped specialist working strictly from a knowledge base a team hands it, not a general-purpose line that picks up a business's main phone number and improvises its way through whatever a caller throws at it. That's a different job, and for most small businesses, it's the one that needs answering first.
What This Means for Your Phones on Monday
The real lesson from a company that built its entire reputation on writing down what happened on calls: the fastest way to trust an AI with a conversation is to already have years of transcripts proving you understand what a correct version of that conversation looks like. Before handing any AI your phone line, ask the same question Fireflies is answering for WebFX — does anyone have, in writing, what a correct answer to your five most common calls actually is? If that knowledge base doesn't exist yet, that's this week's homework, not the AI's job.
